Mayan Canals
To the south of Tulum, in the area of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, there lie a number of vast inland lagoons. Thousands of years ago, the Maya, wishing to create the shortest route to the sea, connected up these lagoons by digging canals through the mangroves.
However, as clever as they were, it wasn't until the 20th Century that these people finally struck upon the ultimate use case for such beautiful waterways - floating tourists down them.
Prepare to strap-in, hold tight, and drift off through a barrage of sublime tranquility and peace, as you bob down the mangrove channels...
The one to go to is called Muyil, just a 5 minute drive south from the mayan ruins worth the same name. Muyil ruins, though small compared to Cobá or even Tulum ruins, are worth visiting. They are very close to Tulum.
